Suspect in Canadian School Deaths Developed Shooting Simulator on Gaming Platform

In a shocking development, it has come to light that the 18-year-old suspect involved in a tragic high school shooting in British Columbia had previously designed a mass shooting simulator within the popular gaming platform Roblox. This revelation raises serious concerns about the influence of digital environments on real-world violence.
The simulator, which featured a virtual shopping mall, allowed players—represented by avatars typical of Roblox—to engage in simulated firearm violence against one another. This gruesome game came to public attention following a report by 404 Media on Thursday.
Online investigators initially discovered the suspect’s Roblox account and the associated game on Kiwi Farms, a controversial platform recognized for doxing and harmful trolling behaviors. Following the shooting incident which occurred on a Wednesday, Canadian authorities identified the suspect as Jesse Van Rootselaar.
In response to the incident, Roblox issued a statement declaring: “We have removed the user account associated with this horrifying event, as well as all related content. We are delighted to extend our full cooperation to law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.”
According to Roblox, the “Mall experience” could only be accessed through Roblox Studio, a specialized application for developers, which contributed to its low visibility with only seven recorded visits. This suggests that, while the content was disturbing, it had not gained widespread traction among users.
Furthermore, Roblox mentioned its commitment to safety by employing a mixed approach of artificial intelligence and specialized safety personnel to scrutinize user-uploaded content prior to its display on the platform. This response underscores the challenges faced by platforms like Roblox in moderating their vast and varied user-generated content.
The shooting on Wednesday has been marked as one of the most devastating school incidents in Canada since the tragic École Polytechnique shooting in 1989, during which 14 women lost their lives. The Tumbler Ridge incident resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including a teacher, five students, the suspect’s mother, and her stepbrother. Tragically, the suspect, who had shown signs of mental health issues, was discovered dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
This incident is not the first occasion on which Roblox has faced scrutiny regarding its platform’s content. The game creation platform empowers millions of users to design and share a plethora of games, many of which are innocuous, emphasizing activities like fishing or camping trips. However, it has also seen its share of controversies.
Chillingly, Roblox has been criticized for allegedly providing access to Jeffrey Epstein-themed content aimed at children, and it is currently embroiled in a lawsuit in California related to the facilitation of sexual exploitation and assault against minors.
The connection between violent video games and real-world mass shooting events has been a subject of long-standing debate. Research has provided inconclusive results, indicating that while some studies suggest a minor correlation between video gaming and real-world aggression, the link is far from definitive.
Despite the lack of conclusive evidence implicating video games in fostering violence, recent occurrences in society have highlighted an emerging phenomenon known as “gamified violence.” This trend depicts how elements commonly found in video game design are being adopted by extremists in the execution of real-world attacks.
Instances of this alarming trend are becoming increasingly prevalent. Notably, the assailant behind the 2019 mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand, live-streamed the horrific act on Twitch, a platform popular for game streaming. Similarly, the shooter involved in the racially charged attack in Buffalo, New York in 2022, utilized this approach, further illustrating the overlap between gaming culture and real-world violence.
