Kreps offered two possible explanations for this stance. Kreps analogized this situation to the legal battle over the San Bernardino iPhone, where the FBI sought Apple’s assistance to break into a shooter’s device under emergent circumstances. “Once the technology is handed to the military, the original creators lose control over how it is utilized. This power shift empowers military professionals to repurpose technology for national security needs,” she explained.

In that case, Anthropic wouldn’t necessarily know how its technology is being deployed.

Exactly—once the software enters military operations, it becomes classified and obscured from the original creators, effectively sealing off any transparency.

Given the current dynamics, it’s clear that longstanding questions about military AI applications are increasingly urgent. What’s your perspective as these tensions escalate?

Kreps noted that while existential risks associated with AI misuse have been frequently discussed, more immediate concerns often take precedence. The potential deployment of autonomous weapons raises critical questions about the ethical frameworks ensuring human oversight in military contexts. “How do we discern whether a human is involved in decision-making processes? The challenge remains in clearly defining and enforcing guidelines that govern AI use in combat,” she remarked.
