Meta strikes a $60 billion agreement with chipmaker AMD amid concerns over the AI bubble.

In a significant move reflecting the ever-growing demand for artificial intelligence technology, the owner of Facebook has entered into an agreement to procure $60 billion (£44.5 billion) worth of AI chips from the American semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). This decision comes amidst concerns regarding the substantial investments being made in the AI sector, highlighting the risks associated with such heavy expenditure amid uncertain returns. These fears have not deterred Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as it has secured a comprehensive five-year deal, which also includes an investment to acquire 10% of AMD’s shares.

Previous agreements in the tech world suggest a strong reliance on processing power within the AI field. Last year, AMD inked a similar contract with OpenAI, which was viewed as a significant endorsement of AMD’s chip technology and software solutions, resulting in a notable surge in the company’s stock value. Additionally, Meta has recently finalized another partnership with Nvidia, AMD’s larger competitor, for the acquisition of millions of AI chips, further illustrating the competitive landscape of AI hardware.

When it comes to the specifics of the deal, AMD plans to provide Meta with chips amounting to a total of 6GW. The supply will commence with 1GW of the upcoming MI450 hardware, set to be delivered in the latter half of this year, as announced by AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su. This arrangement highlights the critical role that innovative chip technology plays in enabling advanced AI applications and services.

Beyond its flagship graphics chips (GPUs), Meta is also interested in acquiring central processing units (CPUs), including a customized version tailored to meet the unique specifications of the social media giant. This bespoke CPU will be designed to optimize performance while maintaining minimal energy consumption, a key consideration in today’s tech landscape, according to Su. The agreement will encompass two generations of AMD’s CPUs, ensuring that Meta will have access to cutting-edge technology well into the near future.

“There’s no question that Mark Zuckerberg is incredibly ambitious in his vision for Meta, and we aim to leverage every facet of our technology to support that vision,” remarked Su, referencing Meta’s CEO. “This partnership signifies that Meta is making a substantial commitment to AMD’s technology.”

Additionally, it’s noteworthy that Meta played a role in the design of the MI450 chip. This particular hardware is specially optimized for a computing process known as inference, which is crucial for AI applications, especially for natural language processing tasks performed by chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. As the market for inference hardware continues to grow, industry analysts predict it may outpace the demand for equipment needed for training large AI models, further solidifying the importance of Meta’s strategic investments.

In an effort to diversify its chip sources and ensure a robust infrastructure, Meta plans to continue acquiring semiconductors from other manufacturers while also working on developing its own in-house processors. According to Santosh Janardhan, Meta’s head of infrastructure, the company has been exploring options with Google to utilize the tech giant’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for its AI initiatives. This strategy indicates that the scale at which Meta is constructing data centers and associated infrastructure necessitates collaboration with multiple chip suppliers. “All chipmakers effectively have a place at the table,” Janardhan noted, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the industry.
