Grindr Experiments with AI Matchmaking in Australia as Dating App Users Face Burnout and Safety Issues

In an era marked by dating app fatigue and heightened user safety concerns, Grindr is rolling out premium subscription options that integrate AI technology to enhance the matchmaking process. This strategic pivot aims to provide a more personalized experience for users, particularly as they navigate the complex landscape of online dating.
Grindr primarily serves gay and bisexual men, offering profiles displayed in a grid format for users located nearby. Each profile includes photos, statistics, and bios crafted to help users connect, whether they’re looking for casual encounters or serious relationships. According to Grindr, its user base boasts 15 million monthly active participants around the globe.
To address concerns about underage users, Grindr has initiated AI-driven measures to identify potential underage profiles based on conversations that might indicate a user is younger than 18. Moreover, since December, the platform has begun implementing age verification checks in Australia, utilizing facial recognition and ID scanning technologies to ensure compliance with online safety regulations.
Though it’s early in the process, the company hopes these age verification checks will curtail underage access, thereby also preventing individuals from exploiting the app to arrange meetings for malicious intents, such as robbery or assault.
Recently, a parliamentary inquiry in Victoria was established to investigate these troubling incidents, including the potential influence of “manosphere” online figures in propagating homophobic attitudes and attacks. This inquiry has gained momentum thanks to investigative reporting from the Guardian Australia.

Since going public in 2022, Grindr has increasingly monetized its features and expanded the capabilities available to users on higher-tier subscriptions. Basic functionalities, such as increased visibility and extended distances for user profiles, have been transitioned to a paid model, complete with pop-up ads for free account holders.
The new AI-driven feature known as Edge, which has recently been tested in Australia and New Zealand, comes at a significant price point of A$109.99 per month, compared to the A$29.99 basic subscription plan. Reports indicate that pricing may vary by region, with some US users facing monthly fees as high as US$349.
Edge introduces several advanced features, including AI-generated summaries of past conversations, making it easier for users to reconnect when visiting new locations. Dubbed the “gAI,” this model identifies potential matches based on profile statistics and past interactions, allowing users to connect with suitable profiles even without extensive searching.
Tristan Pineiro, Grindr’s global chief marketing officer, noted that the company often conducts pilot programs in Australia due to its demographic of early adopters who are open to providing valuable feedback. “Australia is a rich testing ground for us,” he elaborated, emphasizing the willingness of Australians to share their experiences with the app.
Acknowledging that a large portion of Grindr’s users are still on the free plan—lacking AI functionalities—Pineiro confirmed that free user profiles would still be matched with those on the Edge plan, unless users choose to opt out of AI-related features. This indicates a broader strategy to integrate AI across the user base while respecting individual preferences.
Furthermore, Pineiro acknowledged that certain users prefer to keep their communications and profile data separate from Grindr’s AI systems. “Transparency is key; we make it clear that users have the option to opt out because many are concerned about their data privacy. We maintain strict legal agreements to protect user data,” he explained.
In terms of data security, sexual health information remains completely removed from the AI’s reach, addressing valid concerns about sensitive data. This is a crucial point, especially as users increasingly demand a higher level of confidentiality in their dating experiences.
Despite a surge of competition from other dating platforms like Sniffies, Grindr has managed to maintain popularity among Gen Z users, according to Pineiro. He emphasized that the app offers a real-time connection that distinguishes it from other platforms. “Users can engage anytime, chat instantly, and expect quick responses. The immediate gratification of connection is unparalleled,” he remarked.
