Artists Can’t Invest in These Dream Homes | Short Correspondence

Each time I come across the house prices in the fantasy house hunt feature, I can’t help but chuckle at the sheer absurdity. This is, after all, a space for imagination and dreams. Yet, as I perused last weekend’s selection, a wave of frustration surged through me. The article titled “Homes for sale to inspire artists in England – in pictures” truly hit a nerve. In 2024, the Guardian had reported that the median income for visual artists had plummeted to a mere £12,500, according to a recent article on artist earnings. This figure represents a staggering 40% decline since 2010. Even the most imaginative financial planning cannot transform this modest income into a plausible mortgage for any of the properties highlighted in the feature.

In an interesting twist, young Rosie, just 10 years old, shares how an app categorized certain prints as those belonging to coyotes, as noted in the “Young country diary”. Recently, while exploring Cumbria, I stumbled upon what I believed to be a fox skull. To validate my suspicion, I turned to Google Lens for assistance, and, to my surprise, it identified it as a coyote’s. Isn’t it intriguing how technology can sometimes mislead us as much as it informs us?

In a recent report on January 29, scientists are suggesting that genetics may hold the key to longevity. While I find this intriguing, I have my own perspective: I believe the essence of a long life can be boiled down to something as fundamental as the way we breathe.

Reflecting on my travels from a few years back, I recall spotting a sign outside a bar in Málaga that advertised a peculiar item: Tapa’s. This leads me to wonder if such infections of wordplay and miscommunication are spreading further afield.
